USA's "Strong Password" Policy
USA enforces a “strong password” policy for logins into USA resources. The purpose of the password rules is to increase our corporate security by making password-cracking more difficult.
A strong password must be at least eight (8) characters long and contain at least:
1.
2.
3.
4.
One upper case letter (A, B, C,..)
One lower case letter (a, b, c,..)
One numeric digit (0 through 9)
One special character (!, @, #, $, %, etc.)
A strong password cannot contain:
1.
2.
3.
4.
More than 3 consecutive characters of the user's ID
Any English language word of more than 3 characters (The sequence 'bar'
in a password would be accepted, but the sequence 'barn' would be rejected.)
Repeating sequences of more than 2 characters (The password 'Tz$3zxczxc8'
would be rejected because, although it meets the previous criteria, it contains
the 3 letter repeating sequence 'zxczxc'.)
A palindrome (It cannot be the same backwards as it is forwards - like 'T$8zz8$T').
Additional requirement:
The maximum number of sequential digits or characters is 2. (The sequences '45' or
'ab' would be allowed in a password, but not the sequences '456' or 'abc'.)
Here are some tips for password creation:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
Start the password with a capital letter. This will fulfill the first requirement,
and putting a capital letter in the first character position will make this requirement
easier to remember.
Use special characters that resemble alphabetical characters. For instance, use
a dollar sign ($) for the letter 'S'. Or use the '@' symbol for the letter 'a'. Avoid the
use of commas and colons in your strong password.
Use letters or symbols as a substitute for whole words. For example, use the letter
'R' or 'r' for the word 'are'. Or use the '#' sign for the word 'number'.
Use digits to represent whole words. For example, use the digit '1' for the word 'one'.
Using some of the above tips, the password 'C@ne$r#1' (Canes are number one)
would be acceptable (especially if you are a Miami Hurricanes fan).
